JPEG 2000 SDK Demo
This demonstration illustrates the performance and functionality of the new JPEG 2000 still image compression standard. JPEG 2000 yields more than improved image quality. It incorporates a feature set that is designed to address the image storage, transmission, and display needs of today’s wired society. In this demonstration, we highlight a number of these features and present a comparison of the compression performance of JPEG 2000 vs. JPEG.

Progressive Transmission and Rendering, Lossless Compression Option
JPEG 2000 uses a layered file structure which allows for progressive transmission and rendering of images. This enables a client to display an image quickly by decoding only the portion of the image that it has received. As additional data is received by the client, the image can be progressively improved. JPEG 2000 allows the server to transmit an image progressively by:
| (1) Resolution, from a small thumbnail image to a full size image. |  |
| (2) From a low quality image to a losslessly compressed image. | |
| (3) Quality, Color component, grayscale to full color. |  |

File Structure Flexibility
The JPEG 2000 file structure enables a server to use a single compressed image file for a variety of applications, including mobile devices, web browsing and high resolution printing. The Aware JPEG 2000 SDK can deliver image files tailored to the characteristics of the target device. More specifically, the image can be reformatted to create and deliver a customized image for the target device, based on the following client and channel characteristics:
- Display size and depth
- Color/grayscale display
- Memory
- CPU capabilities
- Channel bandwidth
