JPEG2000 is an ISO image compression standard supported by biometrics standards for facial image compression. Several published technical reports illustrate the superior performance of JPEG2000 as compared to JPEG for the compression of facial images. In addition, JPEG2000 provides several features useful for the capture and storage of facial images for biometrics applications.

- Advanced error resiliency features prevent file damage during transmission in noisy environments
